The rise of crossovers (CUV) in the car market has forced almost every auto manufacturer to build SUVs in their fleet. Exotic brands such as Lamborghini, Bentley, and Aston Martin have also joined the movement. This is due to the CUVs versatility and cargo space, making them preferable for small families.
Between 2010 and 2021, the global fleet of SUVs increased from less than 50 million to over 320 million.
With the increase in demand for more rugged off-road vehicles, a gap has begun to form between cool body SUVs and the basic crossovers.
In 2019, Autocar UK discussed how Volkswagen crossovers did not sufficiently differentiate themselves from one another. Because they were all on the same platform. Volkswagen, for instance, had a platform called the MLB Evo that was not only used in the Touareg but also in other models like the Audi QA and Porsche Cayenne.
To solve this overlap problem US giant carmaker Ford has come up with the C2 platform.
The Ford C2 platform has been in development since 2018. It replaced the Ford C1 platform as the compact car platform (C-segment). Ford built the C2 platform to achieve economies of scale by sharing a variety of parts throughout cars, including suspension components, powertrains, and infotainment systems. The C2 chassis, unlike its predecessor, can accommodate vehicles with varied wheelbases and track widths, ranging from subcompact to compact. The driving dynamics of vehicles based on the C2 chassis have received rave reviews.
Ford models that have been equipped with the new C2 platform include the Lincoln Corsair, Lincoln Zephyr, Escape, Mondeo, Evos, Focus, Fusion, Maverick, and the new Bronco Sport.
The new Ford Bronco Sport looks similar to the original one but its foundations are different.
The redesigned unibody structure, rather than a body-on-frame architecture, gives the tiny off-road ute more road-friendly driving qualities than the original Bronco SUV. The new Bronco Sport is much more than a muscled-up version of the popular Escape.
According to Ford CEO Jim Farley, the Bronco sport was designed using unconventional methods in the desire to create something more robust.
It boasts a ground clearance of 7.8 inches with an impressive set of off-road figures with an approach angle of 30.4 degrees, a break-over angle of 20.4 degrees, and a departure angle of 33.1 degrees.
These modifications provide the new Bronco Sport with relatively robust operability. Given the nature of the vehicle, it is.
The Ford Maverick is also built on the same platform. The use of the C2 platform is said to have cut the automaker 2 years in the Ford Maverick development process.
During the Maverick’s development, Ford’s main target was to build a truck for shoppers who desire the distinct utility of a truck without the standard size restrictions and expensive cost of existing off-road trucks.
When compared to the Honda accord, the Maverick is 4 inches longer but has the same width making it more reliable to drive on a daily basis for people who are not fans of the midsize truck.
The C2 platform by Ford has made an impact across the entire car industry forcing other carmakers such as Hyundai to adopt the platform. Other carmakers such as Subaru and Toyota RAV4 have begun modifying their models into using the same platform.
