After almost a decade, the all-new 2026 Toyota Hilux has been announced. For the first time, some markets, especially in Europe, will see a fully electric version while retaining the tried and tested diesel, petrol and hybrid variants. Beneath the style, the proportions have been skilfully balanced. The new Hilux is of similar dimensions to the outgoing 8th-generation model, which has gained alot of criticism and praise online, depending on your stance.

Power passes through either a manual or an automatic transmission, mated to a part-time four-wheel-drive system with a low-range transfer case.

The Hilux is built on the same ladder body-on-frame chassis, but now improved to provide stability and durability for off-road work. Generous ground clearance, a practical wheelbase, and underbody protection panels ensure that the truck can handle heavy loads and tough terrain with ease. Most exterior components are replaceable to reinforce the pickup’s long-term usability.

Interior & Practicality

Step inside the 2026 Hilux, and you’ll quickly realize that Toyota has taken a function-first approach with a design heavily inspired by the prado / Land CruiserFJ .

It’s upright and simple, with a sturdy dashboard, easy-to-operate controls, and materials chosen to stand up to dirt, mud, and heavy usage. Early previews showcase a mix of modern convenience and rugged resilience, a cabin that feels just as comfortable.

Seating is for five passengers and includes supportive seats that are designed for long hauls. The headroom is plentiful due to the tall roofline, while the more upright windshield offers better visibility that’s particularly welcome off-road.

Since the cabin section dimensions are constant, the legroom hasn’t changed much.Practicality extends throughout the interior: there are several storage compartments, including deep door pockets and a wide centre console – perfect for tools, gadgets, or other items. The rear cargo area is spacious and flat, with foldable rear seats when extra load capacity is needed.

First to receive the new 2026 Hilux will be the key global markets of Asia, Australia, Europe, and the Middle East, with production ramping up starting in mid-2026. For emerging markets-very much across Africa-the proven diesel and hybrid powertrains of the Hilux, along with its IMV platform, make it a very reliable and practical choice.
