THE ALL-NEW 2026 TOYOTA HILUX

Toyota HiluxAfter almost a decade, the all-new 2026 Toyota Hilux has been announced. For the first time, some markets, especially in Europe, will see a fully electric version while retaining the tried and tested diesel, petrol and hybrid variants. In terms of size, it is very similar to the outgoing 8th-generation Hilux, but underneath, almost everything has been updated.

The new Hilux retains the rugged, tough pickup character that made it a global favorite but adds in smarter tech, a more modern interior that everyone asked for, and new safety features. Of course being a ute,  it’s still built to work hard, now in a more refined and future-ready manner.

Design & Dimensions

Toyota Hilux

Underneath the 2026 Hilux retains the same rugged, purposeful look of its predecessors and adds a more modern, refined stance. Toyota’s designers sought to update the truck without losing the familiar Hilux character that fans and owners have come to know and trust over the years.

Toyota Hilux

At first glance, the new Hilux is instantly familiar: it retains the upright muscular shape, strong wheel arches and practical cargo bed. But the lines are sharper, the front end more aggressive, and details such as the LED headlights and redesigned grille feel more deliberate and modern. The “TOYOTA” lettering on the grille now becoming a thing in the latest models, dropping the iconic emblem.

Beneath the style, the proportions have been skilfully balanced. The new Hilux is of similar dimensions to the outgoing 8th-generation model, which has gained alot of criticism and praise online, depending on your stance.

Practicality is a big concern: bumpers are designed to be easy to fix, body panels durable and simple to replace, and the roofline is designed to accommodate racks and additional gear. Every detail is made to last in tough conditions.

Powertrain & Off-Road Capability

Toyota has chosen to retain proven engines and drivetrains , which is also a subject of discussion.

Depending on the market, the Hilux also offers the following options of engines:

2.4-litre turbocharged petrol

2.5-litre petrol hybrid

2.7-litre petrol

2.4-litre turbo-diesel

2.8-litre turbo-diesel

Fully electric BEV-only select markets, with dual motors and a 59.2 kWh battery for approximately 240 km WLTP, gives all the work and none of the emissions.

Power passes through either a manual or an automatic transmission, mated to a part-time four-wheel-drive system with a low-range transfer case.

The Hilux is built on the same ladder body-on-frame chassis, but now improved to provide stability and durability for off-road work. Generous ground clearance, a practical wheelbase, and underbody protection panels ensure that the truck can handle heavy loads and tough terrain with ease. Most exterior components are replaceable to reinforce the pickup’s long-term usability.

Interior & Practicality

Step inside the 2026 Hilux, and you’ll quickly realize that Toyota has taken a function-first approach with a design heavily inspired by the prado / Land CruiserFJ .

Toyota Hilux

It’s upright and simple, with a sturdy dashboard, easy-to-operate controls, and materials chosen to stand up to dirt, mud, and heavy usage. Early previews showcase a mix of modern convenience and rugged resilience, a cabin that feels just as comfortable.

Seating is for five passengers and includes supportive seats that are designed for long hauls. The headroom is plentiful due to the tall roofline, while the more upright windshield offers better visibility that’s particularly welcome off-road.

Toyota Hilux Since the cabin section dimensions are constant, the legroom hasn’t changed much.Practicality extends throughout the interior: there are several storage compartments, including deep door pockets and a wide centre console – perfect for tools, gadgets, or other items. The rear cargo area is spacious and flat, with foldable rear seats when extra load capacity is needed.

Despite its rugged focus, the new Hilux does not ignore comfort or technology. Features such as a touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone integration, multiple USB ports, and climate control add just enough modern convenience without diluting its utilitarian character.

Outlook:

First to receive the new 2026 Hilux will be the key global markets of Asia, Australia, Europe, and the Middle East, with production ramping up starting in mid-2026. For emerging markets-very much across Africa-the proven diesel and hybrid powertrains of the Hilux, along with its IMV platform, make it a very reliable and practical choice. Maintenance and parts availability should be straightforward thanks to Toyota’s already well-set service network. With its versatility already proven, local availability and prices are yet to be confirmed.

With the all-new Hilux now unveiled, many Toyota fans are already wondering what’s next for the Fortuner, especially since the two models have always shared the same platform and powertrains for the longest.
