The Mercedes Benz Vito’s first generation, designated W638, was manufactured from 1996 to 2003. It came with two engine options: diesel and gas. In a more luxurious and expensive variant, this body style was available as the V-Klasse (Viano was substituted with the name for the second generation of Vito). The Viano also had fewer van-like elements than the Vito, such as only two front seats and a larger and more spacious seating capacity. The Vito 108 E, a battery-electric derivative of the W 638, was introduced in 1996, with a three-phase asynchronous electric traction motor producing up to 40 kW.

Between 2004 and 2013, the second generation codenamed W639 was built. In most markets, six or seven seats were standard. By installing two three-seater seats in the back, the Viano may be converted into an eight-seat people carrier. To boost cargo capacity, the rear seats can be folded down or eliminated entirely. As part of the renovation, Vito was renamed Viano in 2010. Other changes included standard Blue EFFICIENCY technology, new interior trim materials, a new ambient lighting system with dimmable individual LED reading lamps and fiber optic units, an optional rear seat entertainment system, a redesigned cockpit, and a new suspension with front and rear axles that were revised and specially tuned to match each model.

In 2014, the third generation V-Class, codenamed W447, was introduced as a full-size MPV to replace the R-Class. It was also touted as a replacement for the Mercedes-Benz Viano. Vito was updated with standard Attention Assist and Crosswind Assist, as well as an optional Intelligent Light System (LED indicators, LED daytime running lamps, LED low-beam headlamps, and main beam with cornering light function).  In 2017, the eVito, an electric panel van variation based on the W447 chassis, was released. The W447 eVito has more energy storage than the discontinued W639 Vito E-CELL. The 2017 Mercedes Benz V-Class is available in one engine option; 2.1 L (Diesel), which is mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission.

Reliability

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz V-Class is regarded as a dependable vehicle, particularly for those with larger families. It has plenty of space and allows people to ride for a longer period without becoming fatigued or uncomfortable.

However, its ground clearance is less than what is recommended on Kenyan roads. This may prevent users from taking advantage of mild off-road terrain or a smooth clearing of the speed bumps.

Concerns regarding the front-seat wire loom fasteners are one of the most common problems reported in this multi-purpose vehicle. The swiveling function on the front seats may cause the wiring loom to fall free, causing the airbags to deploy at random. Mercedes recalled a number of vans to address this issue.

Refer to the Mercedes Benz V-Class buyer guide for a thorough dependability report. We also urge that you always follow the instructions in the owner’s manual.
