2017 Toyota Sienta Review

The Sienta is a Toyota mini-multi-purpose vehicle with sliding doors. It is positioned below the Voxy/Noah and above the Roomy in Toyota's MPV range. The name "Sienta" is derived from the Spanish word "siete" meaning "seven" (referring to its maximum passenger capacity) and the English word "entertain".  Its popularity in the Kenyan market has grown largely because of its versatility, durability and good fuel economy. It competes with the Honda Freed, Honda Fit Shuttle, VW Touran and Peugeot Partner.

The first generation Toyota Sienta called the XP80, went into production in 2003 and lasted until 2015. The Sienta received a facelift in 2006, adding new colours such as apple green and metallic blue.

The second generation Toyota Sienta, codenamed XP170, went into production in 2015 and lasted until 2022. It ditched the boxy shape of its predecessor for an updated exterior design inspired by the shape of a trekking shoe. Interior space was also increased compared to previous generations.

The Toyota Sienta is built on the NBC platform that’s shared with the Vitz, Platz, Porte and others. The 2017 Toyota Sienta comes with two engine options, a 1.5-litre 1NZ-FE (petrol) and a 1.5-litre 1NZ-FXE (hybrid) mated to a CVT and eCVT (electronic continuously variable transmission).

Interior

Legroom & Space

The 2017 Toyota Sienta has a basic and unfussy interior.

There is plenty of headroom and legroom in the first row and the seats can be reclined. The second row is not too unsatisfactory as there is plenty of room for knees and head. The third row seats are only ideal for children as there is limited leg and head room.

Cabin Storage

To enhance passenger comfort, the 2017 Toyota Sienta encompasses several storage spaces. A small centre console, a glove box, two cup holders, and door pockets are incorporated in the first row. Only the door pockets and two cupholders are in the second row. Cup holders are accessible to third row passengers.

Boot Space

The 2017 Toyota Sienta offers a spacious load area for small and medium-sized items. If more space is needed, the second and third row seats can be folded.

Exterior

The 2017 Toyota Sienta is wrapped in a body with funky and attractive lines that Toyota says was inspired by a trekking shoe.

At the front, the large grille and Toyota badge dominate the nose, while the headlights feature both daytime running lights and HID beams.

The sliding doors from its predecessors are retained, while the kink in the window line behind the C-pillars and the black plastic trim in front of the rear wheels are distinctive touches. The whimsy can also be seen at the rear, where a bumper garnish connects the two rear lights. The rear styling of the car is definitely a touch more offbeat than the seemingly more conservative nose.

Stability And Handling

The 2017 Toyota Sienta offers a solid and smooth drive. There’s no denying that the engine and gearbox are designed to be efficient and use as little fuel as possible. The steering wheel responds well to road curvature, but you will be forced to reduce speed before taking a sharp bend. Despite the low ground clearance, the suspension system cushions the occupants from jarring movements picked up from the road.

Other technologies used to improve stability include electronic brake force distribution and an anti-lock braking system.

Reliability

The 2017 Toyota Sienta offers excellent fuel economy and is therefore rated as very reliable. Due to its low ground clearance, it is highly advised not to drive off-road as you risk damaging its body components. Regular servicing and maintenance is required to keep the car in good condition.

Refer to the Toyota Sienta buyer guide for a thorough dependability report. We also urge that you always follow the instructions in the owner’s manual.
