Detailed Review

2019 Land Rover Discovery side and front view

The Discovery Series I, the first generation of Land Rover Discovery, was manufactured from 1989 to 1998. The new model was essentially based on the more expensive Range Rover, with the same chassis, suspension, and 4WD system, as well as a derivative body design – particularly the four-door, which copied the majority of the body structure of the more expensive Range Rover.

The Discovery II debuted to the public in 1998 and remained in production until 2004. Although it was still clearly a Series I advancement, its interior and exterior were redesigned to be less utilitarian. Every body part had been altered except for the exterior skin of the back doors. The rear body was extended to increase luggage capacity and to accommodate full-size persons on all seven SE7 seats, as well as to make them all front-facing, but at the expense of increased back overhang, which substantially reduced the car’s departure angle when off-roading.

The release of the Discovery 3 in 2004 marked the beginning of the second generation of Land Rover Discovery. It was manufactured till 2009. The suspension of the LR3 is totally independent. Like the Range Rover L322, this vehicle has an air suspension system that lets you alter the ride height by inflating or deflating the airbags. The automobile may be elevated to increase ground clearance when driving off-road, but it can also be dropped at high speeds to improve handling. ‘Cross-linked’ air suspension was invented by Land Rover.

The Discovery 4, currently in its second iteration, debuted in 2009 and was manufactured until 2016. The new Discovery sports the same smoother, rounder appearance as the front and rear light units, as well as the front grille and bumper, of the 2010 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. The Discovery 4 inherits the late Discovery 3’s body-colored wheel arches and bumpers. Daytime running lamps are offered as an option, and LED lights are prominently displayed in both the front and rear lighting units.

The third-generation Land Rover Discovery, codenamed L462, debuted in 2017 and is still in production.  The new Discovery, which shares the same platform as the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, abandons many of the design traditions of previous models in favor of a more modern, albeit less overtly utilitarian, exterior.

The third-generation Discovery has a much more rounded shape than prior iterations, ditching the classic angular look. The tail lights have been repositioned horizontally, and the third-row side glass is no longer blended with the roof glass. The horizontally split tailgate has been replaced with a standard top-hinged composite tailgate, however, the asymmetrically mounted license plate from prior Discovery models remains as a design clue.

The 2019 Land Rover Discovery is available with two engines: a 3.0 L (Petrol) and a 3.0 L (Diesel) paired with an eight-speed automated transmission.
