The first-generation M-Class, model code W163, was a body-on-frame SUV built from 1997 to 2004. It was a five-seater with a third-row, seven-seater option. The Mercedes-Benz M-Class (W163) was available with permanent four-wheel drive, which routed torque to all four wheels via all open front, center, and rear differentials. A two-speed dual-range transfer case with reduction gearing was used, as well as Mercedes’ groundbreaking Four-wheel Electronic Traction System (4-ETS). By vigorously braking one or more spinning wheels, 4-ETS simulated three differential locks on all three open differentials.

The second-generation M-Class (W164) shared many components with the GL-Class, which featured a larger body to facilitate third-row seating. The 2006 M-Class gets a seven-speed automatic transmission as standard, as well as optional Active Curve-Illuminating -Xenon headlamps that “steer” the vehicle’s course and adjustable-height air suspension. The manual transmission had been abandoned at this point.

The first customer-designated W166, the third generation, rolled off the Vance assembly line in 2011 and remained in production until 2018. It has been extensively refined, with styling cues taken from the latest generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class. The adjustable rear backrests and legroom in the rear seats have both been enhanced. The 2012 M-Class gains a more fuel-efficient 7G-Tronic Plus seven-speed automatic transmission, adaptive cruise control, an active lane departure warning system, and adjustable-height air suspension. The GLE brand debuted in 2015, alongside the W166 makeover and the new five-door coupé variant GLE Coupé (C292).

The fourth generation GLE was released in 2019 and is continuing in production. A plug-in hybrid variant was also introduced. The 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE is available with three engine options: 3.0 L (Hybrid), 3.0 L (Petrol), and 5.5 L (Petrol), each mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission.

Interior

Legroom & Space

The interior of the 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE is sumptuous, with sports seats, a slightly small steering wheel, and a large information screen. Each GLE has ample room for five average-sized persons, but four will be more comfortable, especially in the Coupe.

The first row in both the midsize SUV and coupe has plenty of headroom and legroom, as well as reclining seats. The second row of a midsize SUV offers plenty of headroom and knee room, but taller passengers may be uncomfortable in a coupe due to the sloping roofline, which limits headroom.

Cabin Storage

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE cabin includes numerous storage compartments for items such as smartphones, beverages, goggles, handbags, and so on. The first row has two cupholders, as well as door panel storage, a glovebox, and a center box. There are two cupholders in the second row’s armrest compartment, as well as bottle holders mounted against the doors.

Boot Space

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE midsize SUV has 38.2 cubic feet of cargo capacity behind the rear seats, which expands to 80.3 with the rear seatbacks folded. Coupes have only 23 cubic feet behind the back seat and 60.7 with the seatbacks folded, despite the fact that the cargo floor is level and wide.

Exterior

The front end of the 2019 Mercedes Benz GLE boasts a big Mercedes Benz three-pointed star badge resting within a wide grille, between muscular sculpted fenders. Both the midsize SUV and coupe feature running boards on their sides, although their rear profiles differ. The coupe sports a sloping roofline that gives it a quasi-fastback appearance, as well as a small rear spoiler. The rear of the midsize SUV is not sloppy and features an electronically powered tailgate, LED tail lamps, and turn signals.

Stability And Handling

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz ride is composed, elegant, and quiet. In Comfort mode, the GLE requires greater steering changes to stay centered. Sport mode is more stable. Off-road, GLEs function admirably. The standard coil-spring suspension provides a hard, SUV-like ride, but adjustable dampers and air springs soften it. AMG variants have a separate all-wheel-drive technology, but both can transmit power almost entirely to the rear wheels for improved traction.

This compact luxury midsize SUV also has a number of safety features such as electronic stability control, and antilock brakes, all of which increase stability and handling.

Reliability

The 2019 Mercedes Benz GLE is a dependable vehicle, but in order to get its full benefits, it must be serviced on a regular basis. Its fuel economy is below average, making it expensive for people on a tight budget.

As much as it enjoys the benefits of a superb car, a lot of people have complained about the 2019 Mercedes Benz GLE’s slow throttle response. When you press the gas pedal, it may take a second or two for the transmission to downshift and get the car moving.

Refer to the Mercedes Benz GLE buyer guide for a thorough dependability report. We also urge that you always follow the instructions in the owner’s manual.
