From 1996 to 2003, the first generation Mercedes Benz Vito, designated W638, was built. It was available with two engine options: diesel and gasoline. This body style was also available in a more luxurious and expensive variant known as the V-Klasse (Viano was replaced with the name Vito’s second generation). The Viano also had fewer van-like traits than the Vito, such as only two front seats and a larger and more spacious seating capacity. The Vito 108 E, a battery-electric variation of the W 638, was introduced in 1996 and had a three-phase asynchronous electric traction motor with a maximum output of 40 kW.

Between 2004 and 2013, the second generation, codenamed W639, was manufactured. In most markets, six or seven seats were standard. By putting two three-seater seats in the back, the Viano may be converted into an eight-seat people carrier. To expand cargo capacity, the rear seats can be folded down or removed entirely. As part of the 2010 restoration, Vito was renamed Viano. Other changes included standard Blue EFFICIENCY technology, new interior trim materials, a new ambient lighting system with dimmable individual LED reading lamps and fiber optic units, a redesigned cockpit, and a new suspension with revised and specially tuned front and rear axles for each model.

The W447 dubbed third generation V-Class was released in 2014 as a full-size MPV to replace the R-Class. It was also promoted as a possible replacement for the Mercedes-Benz Viano. Attention Assist and Crosswind Assist are now standard features on the Vito, as well as an optional Intelligent Light System (LED indicators, LED daytime running lamps, LED low-beam headlamps, and main beam with cornering light function).  In 2017, the eVito, an electric panel van based on the W447 chassis, debuted. The W447 eVito has more energy storage than the discontinued W639 Vito E-CELL. The 2019 Mercedes-Benz V-Class comes with a single engine option: a 2.1 L (Diesel) engine linked to a 7-speed and 9-speed automatic transmission.
