2019 Toyota Hilux Review

The Toyota Hilux is a pick-up truck that has left an indelible mark on Kenyan roads due to its off-road prowess, durability, reliability, and capacity to transport loads of freight from one location to another. As good as it is, it contends against the Ford Ranger, Nissan Navara, Isuzu D-Max, Mazda-BT, Nissan Hardbody, Mitsubishi L200, and Volkswagen Amarok.

2019 Toyota Hilux front and side view

Toyota Hilux N10 was the very first version produced from 1968 to 1972. The 1.5-liter engine was upgraded to a 1.6-liter inline-four in 1971. A long-wheelbase model was added to the lineup in 1969. For many years, the short-wheelbase version was also produced.

The N20, or second-generation Hilux, was introduced in 1972 and produced until 1978. It had a more comfortable interior and some cosmetic upgrades over the original.

The third-generation Hilux, which was divided into two models, N30 and N40, was introduced in 1978 and remained in production until 1983. The upgraded model had the same dimensions as the previous model, but it had wider front and rear tracks. In addition, the front suspension was changed from coil springs to a torsion bar system with a double wishbone construction. Some technologies were shared between the 4WD variant and the larger Toyota Land Cruiser, which was only available with the two-litre “18R” engine.

The Toyota Hilux’s fourth generation was divided into three models from 1983 and 1988: N50, N60, and N70. The car received a minor interior and exterior update, including a new grille, a new one-piece front bumper, and an enhanced interior with full high door panels and simulated leather stitching on base and DLX variants.

The fifth-generation Hilux was further divided into five models: the N80, N90, N100, and N110, which were all manufactured between 1988 and 1997. A larger wheelbase was added, increasing cargo area size.

From 1997 until 2004, the Toyota Hilux sixth generation, which was also divided into four categories, namely N140, N150, N160, and N170, was produced. The Hilux received a minor redesign as well as the addition of a few additional engine options. In 2001, the Hilux was facelifted for the 2002 model year.

The seventh generation Hilux was divided into three models: the AN10, AN20, and AN30, and production commenced in 2004 and continued until 2015. Toyota initially offered three pickup truck body configurations: two-door Single Cab (IMV1), two-door Xtra Cab (IMV2), and four-door Double Cab (IMV3). Toyota introduced the Smart Cab in 2008, a four-door cab with hidden rear clamshell doors. The IMV program resulted in the Toyota Innova (AN40) minivan (IMV4) and Toyota Fortuner SUV (IMV5).

The eighth-generation Toyota Hilux is divided into three models: AN110, AN120, and AN130. Production began in 2015 and is still ongoing. It was the first in the Toyota IMV family to receive a new generation, along with the related Fortuner. The “Keen Look” design language is used on the eighth-generation Hilux, which has smaller headlamps with optional projector headlights and LED daytime running lights. This theme continues with matching AC vents and a more “car-like” center fascia. This model is available with an automatic emergency braking system (AEB).

The 2019 Toyota Hilux is available with four engine options: 2.7 L 2TR-FE (Petrol), 4.0 L 1GR-FE (Petrol), 2.4 L 2GD-FTV (Diesel), and 2.8 L 1GD-FTV (Diesel), all of which are mated to either a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. Reliability

The 2019 Toyota Hilux has been in production for a long time, allowing Toyota to make countless adjustments, redesigns, and tweaks to develop a virtually perfect vehicle.

A few owners have voiced concerns about the Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF), which is a common issue with diesel vehicles. Regular service and maintenance are strongly advised to avoid such issues. On the bright side, its high ground clearance allows it to readily cross severe off-road terrain without jeopardizing its body components.
