2022 Jeep Renegade Review
The Jeep Renegade is a subcompact crossover SUV produced by FCA US under their Jeep marque that has been in production since 2014. It competes with Subaru Crosstrek, Kia Seltos, Ford Ecosport, Honda HR-V and Flat 500x in the international market.
Detailed Review
The 2022 Renegade comes with two engine options; a 4-cylinder 2.4-L engine generates 180hp or a 4-cylinder 1.3-L turbocharged engine produces 177hp.

Interior
Even with the optional panoramic sunroof, the Renegade’s interior is open and large, with plenty of headroom and shoulder room. Legroom in the back is, however, limited for the class.
The square-shaped doors open wide, and the seats are high enough to allow for easy entry and exit. The high windshield roof pillars limit forward view, but the huge side and rear windows, combined with the large outside mirrors, allow seeing out the sides and back easier.
Cargo Space
The Renegade is near the bottom of the class, with only 18.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind its rear seats. At the very least, the cargo room is boxy in design, and the load floor is low.
In the front, there’s a bin for your phone or sunglasses in front of the gear shifter, and the door pockets are big enough to store tiny water bottles.
Exterior
The 2022 Renegade’s playful design is unique. The seven-slot grille is instantly recognizable as Jeep, while the rounded headlamps and trapezoidal wheel arches encased in plastic cladding lend the vehicle a purposeful appearance. The base model comes standard with 16-inch black-style steel wheels, but higher trim levels provide up to 19-inch alloys. Daytime running lamps and power-adjustable mirrors are standard across the range, with optional equipment such as automated headlamps, cornering front fog lamps, and rain-sensing wipers becoming available as trim levels advance.
Dimensions
The Jeep Renegade SUV has a height of 66.5 inches, a width of 79.6 inches (including the side mirrors), and a length of 166.6 inches. The wheelbase measures 101.2 inches in length.
Tech features
- Uconnect 7″ Infotainment
- Apple CarPlay / Android Auto
- 7″ Digital Driver Display
- Passenger grab handle
- Rear USB ports
Stability and Handling
The Jeep Renegade is easy to handle, with fast steering and a compact turning circle. You can maneuver easily in and out of traffic or narrow parking lots, and body roll is minimal during turns.
Even though ride quality is decent in most versions, the experience is not as comfortable as in some other crossovers. The Trailhawk trim transfers more discomfort into the cabin than other trims.
Offroad Performance
Any Renegade model with four-wheel drive will be more capable than the majority of commonplace compact SUVs with all-wheel drive, but the Trailhawk grade is best-suited for going off-road. It now includes front and rear recovery tow hooks, low-range gears, hill descent control, a few skid plates, off-road tires, and front and rear skid plates.
The majority of 4WD Renegade grades feature selectable driving modes for snow, sand, and mud, as well as 8 inches of ground clearance. Although it features an additional Rock traction control mode and 8.7 inches of ground clearance, the trail-rated Renegade Trailhawk still falls short of several of the brand’s other off-road-capable cars, such as the Jeep Wrangler.
What we like about the 2022 Jeep Renegade
- Easy-to-use technology features
- Excellent off-road capability
- Agile handling in turns
What we don’t
- Highway wind noise
- High price
- Small cargo space
- Tight backseat legroom for adults
Conclusion
The 2022 Jeep Renegade is comparable to the recess-lonely child who plays in the mud. Even though it’s one of the most capable off-road vehicles in its class, many other subcompact SUVs follow a tried-and-true formula and outperform this Jeep in terms of cargo space, fuel efficiency, acceleration, and/or interior quality.
